GET’s main objectives are to:

a) Promote environmentally and socially sound planning for South Africa’s landscapes in compliance with the Constitution and Bill of Rights, NEMA with its associated and suite of Acts, and legislation that promotes sound town and rural planning.

b) Support local communities by capacitating people, supporting local communities to enable them to participate meaningfully in public participation meetings, by supporting the growing movement that realizes the importance of the environment, cultural heritage, open spaces, natural areas and agricultural land, and by providing legal support, information and advice.

Support Local Communities

Often developers and companies such as mining houses neglect environmental laws when working with local communities not well informed about their rights and/or environmental legislation.
GET will therefore:

  • facilitate information sharing with local communities affected by unsustainable development;
  • work with local communities to both capacitate and share information so they are in a better position to make informed decisions about their local environment and livelihoods; and
  • support local communities to enable them to participate meaningfully in public participation meetings related to projects taking place in their own areas.
  • Advocate for environmental and social justice by forming alliances with other NGOs, CBOs and affected communities, and by identifying and working with relevant organisations, decision-makers, government agencies and environmental attorneys to challenge injustices and non-compliance with legislation.
  • Support the growing movement that realizes the importance of the Environment, open spaces, natural areas and agricultural land. Faced with the threats of climate change and predicted disasters, communities able to feed themselves will be more resilient. SA must feed itself; it is important to encourage and support farms to remain a food source and not sell to developers
  • Create an Education Plan to assist people make better decisions regarding conservation and as a support mechanism for building conservation-based policies, value systems and creating sustainable and environmentally sound Public- Private Partnerships with government.
  • Be the "Database" for environmental legislation and important environmental incidents occuring throughout South Africa by gathering legislation related to environmental issues and creating understandable documents on how to implement legislation and make it a valid effective tool for the public.

GET resolves to hold government and municipalities to account regarding management of funds to ensure a healthy natural environment for all citizens of the country and future generations.

GET will adopt a holistic approach.

GET will become a voice to be heard.
